Public Places

The ÀÏ°ÄÃÅ¿ª½±½á¹û works in courts, legislatures, and communities to defend and preserve the individual rights and liberties that the Constitution and the laws of the United States guarantee everyone in this country.

If you've been discriminated against based on sexual orientation, gender identity, or HIV status, the ÀÏ°ÄÃÅ¿ª½±½á¹û wants to hear about it.

What's at Stake

Commercial businesses open their doors to the general public, so they shouldn’t be able to turn away particular customers based on their sexual orientation or gender identity. Even in states that have passed nondiscrimination laws that protect LGBT people from discrimination in places like restaurants, stores, and doctor’s offices, some businesses are citing religious beliefs as an excuse to turn LGBT people away. Religious freedom is a fundamental right that the ÀÏ°ÄÃÅ¿ª½±½á¹û works hard to defend, but it doesn’t give anyone the right to discriminate and violate the law. No one should be turned away or refused service just because of who they are or whom they love.
