We’re not too busy this week, with the House and Senate in recess until Wednesday, but we are planning for a couple events in June.

The Paycheck Fairness Act is expected to come to the Senate floor for a vote next week - possibly as early as June 4 or 5. Last week, we participated in a , and our own Deb Vagins spoke at a press conference to stress the importance of this legislation. You can ask your senator to support the Paycheck Fairness Act before next week’s vote by clicking .

Coming up in a couple of weeks, our Washington Legislative Office will host a symposium commemorating the 30th anniversary of the Supreme Court’s decision in Plyler v. Doe (June 11), the case that ensured equal access to public education to all children, regardless of their citizenship or immigration status. It will feature keynote addresses from both Assistant Attorney General Tom Perez and Assistant Secretary for Civil Rights Russlynn Ali.

Wednesday, May 30

Immigration: The ÀÏ°ÄÃÅ¿ª½±½á¹û and the National Immigration Law Center will hold an invitation-only Hill briefing to prepare Congress to respond to the forthcoming Supreme Court decision in Arizona vs. U.S. The ÀÏ°ÄÃÅ¿ª½±½á¹û Immigrants’ Rights Project and WLO will lead the discussion.

Voting Rights: Senior Legislative Counsel Deb Vagins will participate in a panel discussion on voting rights, moderated by Rep. John Lewis, at the Congressional Black Caucus Faith Leaders’ Summit.

Thursday, May 31

FISA Amendment Act: The House Judiciary Subcommittee on Crime, Terrorism and Homeland Security will hold a hearing on the FISA Amendments Act of 2008. Deputy Legal Director Jameel Jafferhas been invited to testify.

Immigration: The Subcommittee on Immigration Policy and Enforcement of the House Judiciary Committee will hold a hearing on H.R. 2831, a bill to modify the requirement for a Cuban national to qualify for and maintain status as a permanent resident.
