There was that FISA compromise was in the works, but it wasn't until late Friday night that our lobbyists confirmed that House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (D-Md.) is working on a compromise bill with Senator Jay Rockefeller (D-W.Va.) - yes, the same senator known for he's angling to protect with immunity. Hoyer and Rockefeller may try to lock in a deal within the next few days.
It seemed like just yesterday that a flood of calls to House Democrats' offices compelled them to stand up the Bush administration and DNI Michael McConnell's lies and fear-mongering that another terrorist attack was imminent without a Protect America Act reauthorization. House Democrats stood firm and protected their constituents' rights; but now it looks like they're ready to back down, and cave in to the President's immunity demands.
It's imperative that you and let them know you're watching: tell them you expect them to vote against any compromise deal that gives the law-breaking phone companies immunity, or allows spying on Americans without warrants.
Don't let your House member give President Bush even greater spying powers.
