This remarkable email chain is from April 14, 2003. The original message, from a military interrogator in Iraq to all concerned (ALCON), announces 鈥淭he gloves are coming off gentlemen regarding these detainees, [redacted] has made clear it wants these individuals broken,鈥 and asks for 鈥渨ish lists鈥 of interrogation techniques. Someone forwards this message, commenting simply, 鈥淪ounds crazy, but we鈥檙e passing this on.鈥
The thread is picked up by a military interrogator who insists those now in U.S. custody 鈥渦nderstand force, not psychological mind games or incentives,鈥 and advocates the use of several techniques used in the U.S. military鈥檚 SERE training programs.
In the last message in the chain 鈥 another of the countless examples in the documents where Americans raised objections to what they were seeing 鈥 the writer begins, 鈥淎s for 鈥榯he gloves need to come off鈥︹ we need to take a deep breath and remember who we are.鈥 This final email in particular is a must-read.
