Last week, Barry Steinhardt, Director of the ÀÏ°ÄÃÅ¿ª½±½á¹û's Technology and Liberty Project, wrote a letter to the Article 29 Working Party of the European Commission. Article 29 specifically addresses personal data protection issues, and how data is used in our current information society.

Barry had some bad news for Article 29 commissioners regarding the National Security Agency's warrantless wiretapping program, which he sums up in an our . He concludes that the NSA program likely violates European privacy laws, and urges the members of the working group to investigate how citizens of their countries are affected. Barry points out in the letter that when it comes to the NSA spy program, there is no oversight or legal protection for non-Americans, and the program "clearly violates European legal requirements for the fair and lawful processing of personal information."
