Glitch in the Code: Black Girls and Algorithmic Justice
October 14, 2021
Imagine you鈥檝e forgotten once again the difference between a gorilla and a chimpanzee, so you do a quick Google image search of 鈥済orilla.鈥 But instead of finding images of adorable banana-obsessed animals, photos of a Black couple show up.
Is this just a glitch in the algorithm? Or, is Google an ad company, not an information company, that鈥檚 replicating the discrimination of the world it operates in? How can this discrimination be addressed and who is accountable for it?
Our guest today, UCLA professor, MacArthur Fellow, and best-selling author of 鈥淎lgorithms of Oppression,鈥 Dr. Safiya Noble answers some of these questions. This week's episode comes from the At Liberty archive.
