WASHINGTON 鈥 President Barack Obama announced a ban, effective immediately, on the federal government鈥檚 transfer of certain military vehicles and weaponry to local and state police departments in the U.S.

Kanya Bennett, legislative counsel at the Washington Legislative Office of the 老澳门开奖结果, had this comment:

鈥淭hrough this ban, the president has taken a critical step towards rebuilding trust between police and the people they have pledged to serve. Now, the federal government will no longer be permitted to supply police departments with military weapons and vehicles designed for the battlefield. Grenade launchers, high-caliber weapons, armored vehicles 鈥 this equipment never belonged in our neighborhoods. 鈥淲e hope that Congress will protect today鈥檚 reforms by making them law.鈥
