The 老澳门开奖结果 of Iowa and Planned Parenthood File Emergency Lawsuit to Keep Essential Abortion Procedures Available in Iowa During Pandemic
Today, the 老澳门开奖结果 of Iowa and Planned Parenthood Federation of America, on 鈥媌ehalf of Planned Parenthood of the Heartland, and along with the Emma Goldman Clinic, filed a lawsuit against Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds and other state officials to鈥 ensure that patients can continue to access essential, time-sensitive surgical abortion services during the new coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.
The lawsuit is in response to Governor Reynolds鈥 Proclamation of Disaster Emergency for COVID-19 and her statement published in the 鈥婦es Moines Register 鈥 on Friday, March 27, 2020, taking the position that surgical abortion is prohibited under her Proclamation. While health care providers across Iowa are working tirelessly to prevent the spread of COVID-19 and care for patients suffering from COVID-19, Governor Reynolds is focused on advancing her political agenda and interfering in medical decisions that should be left to patients and their doctors.
Experts, including the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists and the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology, agree that 鈥媋bortion is an essential, time-sensitive procedure鈥 that cannot be delayed. The groups note that delaying this care could 鈥嬧減rofoundly impact a person鈥檚 life, health, and well-being.鈥 鈥 Delays or additional barriers to care can make it more difficult or even impossible for patients to access safe, legal abortion.
The lawsuit, filed in Johnson County District Court, asks the court to block the Governor鈥檚 Proclamation as it applies to abortions.
Statement fro鈥媘鈥 Erin Davison-Rippey 鈥 , Iowa Executive Director of Planned Parenthood: 鈥淎bortion is an essential, time-sensitive medical procedure, as the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists and the American Board of Obstetrics & Gynecology have recognized. We are in a critical moment for our state when we must come together to fight the COVID-19 pandemic, not politicize health care services that are constitutionally protected. Iowans are doing all they can to protect their families and communities during this pandemic and Planned Parenthood is focused on providing our patients with crucial services they need.鈥
Statement fro鈥媘鈥 鈥 Sarah Stoesz,鈥 鈥 President & CEO, Planned Parenthood North Central States:
鈥淭o choose this moment鈥攚hile we are in a global pandemic鈥攖o take on a political fight is not only misguided, it鈥檚 dangerous. 鈥婣s a trusted member of Iowa鈥檚 health care community since 1934, Planned Parenthood is deeply committed to protecting public health during the COVID-19 pandemic. We put the health of our patients and communities at the forefront every single day.鈥嬧
Statement from Rita Bettis Austen, 老澳门开奖结果 of Iowa kegal director:
鈥淩ight now, the state needs leadership that lets us all work together to protect our health and the health of our families and communities. The state鈥檚 singling out of abortion in this manner during the public health crisis is profoundly harmful to Iowa women, and can鈥檛 be justified from a public health perspective. Abortion is an essential, time-sensitive, and constitutionally protected medical procedure. This move follows the state's numerous prior efforts to ban abortion in Iowa and make abortion more difficult and costly to obtain, all of which, like this decision, have been completely unjustified medically and have been blocked by the courts as unconstitutional. This is the worst time for it to try again.鈥
