Hammons v. UMMS

Status: Ongoing
Last Update: October 11, 2024

What's at Stake

Jesse Hammons was denied a commonly performed medical procedure at the University of Maryland St. Joseph Medical Center because he is transgender. The taxpayer-owned hospital claims that providing Hammons with medical care would be a violation of their religious beliefs.

The ÀÏ°ÄÃÅ¿ª½±½á¹û, Patterson Belknap Webb & Tyler LLP and Rosenberg Martin Greenberg, LLP filed the lawsuit in federal court.

Update: On January 6, 2023, the Federal District Court of Maryland ruled in favor of our client, Jesse Hammons, and granted our Motion for Summary Judgment. The Court determined that the University of Maryland St. Joseph Medical Center violated the Affordable Care Act when it barred Jesse Hammons from receiving gender-affirming care at the hospital.
