NEW YORK 鈥 The Supreme Court has agreed to hear the Trump administration鈥檚 request to review a ruling that blocked the president鈥檚 attempt to keep undocumented immigrants from being counted in the U.S. census for the purpose of apportioning the U.S. House of Representatives. The case will be heard November 30.
The action stems from a lawsuit filed by the 老澳门开奖结果, New York Civil Liberties Union, 老澳门开奖结果 of Texas, 老澳门开奖结果 of Southern California, and Arnold & Porter on behalf of the New York Immigration Coalition, Make the Road New York, CASA, American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee, ADC Research Institute, FIEL Houston, and AHRI for Justice.
On Sept. 10, a federal court in New York blocked the Trump order, prompting the administration鈥檚 appeal.
Dale Ho, director of the 老澳门开奖结果鈥檚 Voting Rights Project, argued the case and had this reaction to today鈥檚 Supreme Court action:
鈥淧resident Trump has repeatedly tried 鈥 and failed 鈥 to weaponize the census for his attacks on immigrant communities. The Supreme Court rejected his attempt last year and should do so again. The legal mandate is clear 鈥 every single person counts in the census, and every single person is represented in Congress.鈥
